The coronavirus that took hold of all over the world, is lastly seen in Turkey too. First of all, I hope both Turkey and the rest of the world can overcome this epidemic in shortest time with least damage. In this article, I would like to focus on the effect of the spread of coronavirus to technological development and new generation technologies promise us to deal with this epidemic.
Many countries began to take radical measures with the rapid spread of coronavirus. Most of these are actually the measures that humanity has taken for hundreds of years in the face of epidemics, such as border closure, isolation, preventing crowded meetings, improving hygiene conditions. However today, due to the factors such as globalization and the world population reaching enormous amounts, the virus continues to spread rapidly and traditional precautions for epidemic remain insufficient. This situation shows that, 21th century world problems need 21th century solutions.
China is one of the countries that tends to use proactive methods and they are trying to use new generation technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics effectively. For example, a robot developed in China can perform many operations, such as examination and workup, which are normally performed by medical personnel, by the help of a remote control. Thus, healthcare workers can fulfill their duties without the risk of getting sick.
The Chinese police can control if the citizens on the street show signs of high fever from 5 meters away with the help of helmets developed with augmented reality technology.
The technological solutions that China uses to fight against the epidemic are not limited to this. Many technological tools are actively used, such as vehicles that allow contactless interaction and transportation, drones equipped with thermal cameras, use of advanced facial recognition systems for disease diagnosis.
Considering all of these, we can say that the coronavirus created a driving force for the implementation of new generation technologies based on artificial intelligence and robotics. The conditions created by the outbreak, also accelerate the spread of applications based on these technologies. Although having sufficient technical infrastructure, for various reasons some applications could not put into practice such as productivity, loss of employment, high investment cost, started to be used quickly to fight the epidemic. I hope that the corona virus epidemic will be overcome as soon as possible, but the experience and savings we have gained through the usage of these technologies will be permanent.
